The 315-acre Wernerwald - named after its founder, the Hamburg official administrator. A. Werner - is the only forest on the German North Sea coast in direct transition to the Wadden Sea.

Soil development and the stable forest climate allow even more demanding deciduous trees to thrive here, and so despite some setbacks in the early years, a forest has emerged over 120 years that greatly enriches the diverse Cuxhaven coastal landscape. The Wernerwald has been under landscape protection since 1938 and is now owned by the State of Lower Saxony.

As a campground I recommend for a bike trip the camping place aft Huus in Sahlenburg. There you can reach someone after 6:00 pm and find everything close to what your cycling heart desires

Despite the gravel surface, mostly easy to drive on.

My often driven route when I go to Kugelbake and feel like the forest path. In wind, this route offers an alternative to the bike path running directly on the water.
