Baluardo San Martino is an important part of the city walls of Lucca, located between the gates of Santa Maria and San Jacopo. It has an almost symmetrical shape with rounded sides. The baluardo, or bulwark, was built between 1592 and 1595 to a design by Ginese Bresciani, with the aim of strengthening the northern part of the walls. This part was weak due to the presence of a large inlet (now Piazza Santa Maria) that was closed off with a straight section of wall, a new gate (Santa Maria), and the construction of Baluardo San Martino. The structure of the bulwark is in an excellent state of preservation and the underground spaces and the eastern exit are used as a pedestrian passage between Via Marti and Via Buiamonti.

What gives this city its special ambience is the wonderful city wall.
