The Lauwers is considered the historical border between western and eastern Friesland. The river is mentioned in several places in the 8th century in the Lex Frisionum as Laubachi when demarcating Frisian territories. In particular, the water body demarcated the eastern part of Friesland from that further west when Friesland was divided into areas of validity. This border river between western Lauwers and eastern Lauwers Friesland is called Lagbeki, Labeki or Loveke in other early medieval sources. Even today, the Lauwers marks the border between the current Dutch province of Friesland.
