Hidden behind the old mine buildings of Houthalen-Helchteren lie the Laambroek Ponds, with a surprising bit of mining nostalgia: the former pump house, dating back to 1939. From here, cooling water was pumped from the pond to the mine. In the coming years, the pump house will be renovated, and the plan is to pump water again. This water will no longer go to the mines, but to various reservoirs to rehydrate the surrounding natural environment.
