After three years of construction, the new school building at Lothringerstrasse 1 (now Lassallestrasse) was opened on April 16, 1912 as the "Royal Teachers' Seminary in Zwickau". The Royal Agricultural Office of Zwickau was responsible for developing the design. The impressive building complex consists of seven building sections of different cubic sizes, which are connected to the central building. The dominant banqueting hall contains the magnificent banqueting hall with gallery and organ, which extends over two upper floors and is still largely intact in its original furnishings.

The school building is an important example of reform architecture, and also features elements of a moderate Art Nouveau style.

The institution was renamed the "German High School" in 1922 and the "State High School for Boys" in 1934. From 1942 onwards, the school buildings served as a military hospital. From 1945 to 1948, the Soviet military administration was based here. In 1982, the polytechnic became an extended high school with a high school diploma. In 1946, the school was named after the graphic artist and sculptor Käthe Kollwitz, which the school still bears today.

The Käthe-Kollwitz-Gymnasium (KKG) in Zwickau is a state-run high school run by the city. The course leads to the Abitur in eight years (grades 5 to 12).
