Top cycling routes to Start of the "Trammino Cycle Path" Pisa-Marina-Tirrenia

Tips

  • At the roundabout in front of the church of S. Antonio (Pisa Central Station area) begins the beautiful cycle path called "del Trammino", because it was built more or less on the same route that many years ago was followed by the train that connected Pisa with Tirrenia (and this with Livorno).
The route, in its own lane and perfectly asphalted, runs away from urban traffic, crossing the western part of Pisa close to the walls, then through alleys, underpasses, areas without motorized traffic, until reaching Porta a Mare (starting or arrival point of another important cycle path, that of the Canale dei Navicelli). The path runs parallel, but separate, next to the Via Livornese and finally flows decisively into the countryside taking Via del Giglio. From here to Marina di Pisa it is a succession of cultivated fields, meadows, woods, scrub, interspersed with some farmhouses, farms, horse breeding and a network of ditches.
Here and there you come across metal poles browned by time and weather: they are the old poles that supported the overhead power line that powered the train and which were purposely left as a historical memory.

  • In Marina, those who are not interested in visiting this lively seaside town or the mouth of the Arno River, continue on the cycle path with a wide curve to the left (with the possibility of stopping for a few minutes at the large play area, or taking a hike in the pine and holm oak forest crossed by a dense network of paths).
The next stop is the old train station from which you can choose whether to return to Marina and then to Pisa, or continue to Tirrenia on the beautiful coastal avenue, or continue on the path in its most recent section (the most solitary and shaded by trees), until its conclusion near the town of Tirrenia.
Please note that along the route at intervals there are information panels (which gradually illustrate distances, times, names of places, cultural aspects and curiosities of the area) some water points and benches.
Finally, from Tirrenia, another cycle path on the wide straight seafront can take you in the direction of Livorno up to Calambrone and the mouth of the Arno spillway, which marks the border between the provinces of Pisa and Livorno.

  • The Trammino Cycle Path begins near the roundabout in front of the Church of Sant'Antonio, next to Pisa Central Station (Piazza Sant'Antonio). This is the starting point of the ancient "Trammino" route, the electric railway that until 1960 connected Pisa to the coast of Tirrenia and Livorno.
