The Castle Gate (Bridge Gate) is the imposing entrance to Bratislava Castle and dates back to the 18th century in its current form. Two massive towers and a stone drawbridge impressively convey the fortress's medieval flair. From the forecourt, a beautiful view opens up over the Danube and the Old Town. A brief stop here is worthwhile not only for photos, but also to absorb the history of the castle fortress as you enter the venerable walls.

From the castle to the "palace":
"The last major reconstruction work took place during the reign of Maria Theresa. The 18th century was more peaceful than the 16th and 17th centuries, the main function changed from a defensive structure to a residential castle. This baroque castle, now known as the Theresian castle, was rebuilt between 1755 and 1765. At enormous expense, Maria Theresa had the castle rebuilt by the Viennese court architect Franz Karl Römisch[1]. This remodeling, which cost over 1,300,000 guilders, not only affected the palace, but also the surrounding outdoor facilities and buildings[2]; the so-called courtyard of honor was created on the south side. A commercial courtyard and a stable were built on the west side, and a rococo palace known as the Theresianum was added on the east side. The Theresianum was a three-part building covered with a flat Italian roof. It was magnificently furnished and contained, in addition to the rooms of the governor of Hungary[3], a wing intended for the emperor and Maria Theresa.[2] In the castle itself, a representative Rococo staircase was built in the west wing, which still exists today."
