The Saxon Landwehr and the neighboring Henneberg Landwehr are former defense structures between the Electorate of Saxony, Henneberg and Würzburg possessions. The Saxon Landwehr was built on the territory of the Electorate of Saxony and consisted of various combinations of ramparts, ditches and a so-called hedge, which was understood to be strips of bushes and forest. There were single and double ditches. The excavated earth was piled up to form ramparts. Ditches were so wide that a horse could not jump over them. The Landwehr with ditch and rampart was 8 to 15 meters wide, and even wider with double ditches. The depth of the ditches varied and was probably more than two meters.
