The "Obergurgler Zirbenwald" (1950m - 2100m) is a closed, approximately 20 hectare pine forest, some of which are well over 300 years old. The great age of the pines is extremely rare. This "diamond" in the richly filled jewel box of the Obergurgler landscape has therefore been designated a natural monument since 1963.
A forest fire in the 1880s almost destroyed this gem. Only the old pines survived back then, and today they form a two-tiered forest alongside the fresh young growth. In sunny clearings in between, in gaps underneath, in and on old and young trees, an astonishing variety of mysterious mountain creatures bloom, grow, crawl and buzz. The Obergurgler Zirbenwald is part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve - Gurgler Kamm. Today, a 2.1 km long adventure trail leads through the pine forest.
