The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Neve in Domodossola, in its current form, is a building from the first half of the 17th century, commissioned by the master Bernardino Lazzaro from Val d’Intelvi, and stands on the protective structure that protected an older church from the Bogna river.
The image of the Madonna and Child, dating from 1372, is painted on a wall made of sparsely cemented river pebbles above the altar, which belonged to the original oratory.
The two large paintings in the chancel, Sposalizio della Vergine and San Biagio, depict the marriage of the Virgin and Saint Blaise. Above the entrance gate in the vestibule of the sanctuary, the painter Carlo Mellerio from the Vigezzo Valley painted the miracle of the snowfall on the Esquiline Hill in Rome in 1674. In 1925, in the forecourt, the memorial to the fallen by Angelo Balzardi was unveiled in the presence of King Vittorio Emanuele III: the three bronze statues Dolore, Sacrificio and Vittoria represent pain, sacrifice and victory.
Between 2016 and 2018, extensive restoration work was carried out on the external facades, financed by Léonard Gianadda, honorary citizen of Domodossola and chairman of the association of the same name based in Martigny.
