The parish church of Domodossola is dedicated to the Milanese twins Gervasio and Protasio, tortured to death in the 6th century AD: it was built between 1792 and 1798 on the ruins of a 15th century church, according to a design by the architect Matteo Zucchi.
The Collegiate Church of Domodossola is divided into three naves with six choirs and a valuable high altar in polychrome marble. It had no façade until 1953 and was completed by the architect Giovanni Creppi in 1954 on the initiative of the parish priest Monsignor Luigi Pellanda.
The columned portal comes from the old church: it was created by the master Bernardino Lazzaro from Val d’Intelvi in 1648; the paintings in the barrel vault and on the sides of the columned portal are by Carlo Mellerio, an artist from the Vigezzo Valley who lived in the 17th century. The Romanesque portal made of serpentine stone, which is now incomplete and was restored during the work on the façade, also comes from the first church. The bronze panels on the door are by Vitaliano Marchini, a sculptor from the Academy in Brera in the Ossola Valley.
