Freya’s Cabin is an enchanting wooden structure along the Lakeside Way, designed by Studio Weave in 2009 as part of Kielder’s Art & Architecture program. Constructed from 200 pressed wood panels, the cabin creates a fairytale-like forest, with integrated seating and a facade clad in shimmering gold metal—Freya’s “tears of gold.” The structure tells the fictional story of Freya and Robin, two lovers on opposite sides of the lake, trying to connect with each other through their architectural gifts. Facing Robin’s Hut, Freya’s Cabin invites cyclists and walkers to experience tranquility, wonder, and a touch of romance.

The Lakeside Path around Kielder Water is an excellent round trip on good surfaces with plenty of food and drink and toilets along the way.

Wildflowers are very good in the spring and summer. Park up at Kielder Castle in pay and display (£5) all day.

The visitors centre and cafe there close at 5.00pm. There is a bike shop/hire at Kielder near the car park.

Falstone is tiny but delightful, with a very good pub and tea room in an old school building. Yet despite its size, it has two attractive and substantial churches.

Note the railway bridge and marvel that at one time both Kielder and Falstone were linked to the Carlisle to Newcastle line and the Waverley Line to Edinburgh!

The southern side of the path is where all the cafes, etc. are while the northern route is lacking any facilities at all as there is no road bordering it.

Pick a sunny bright day for visiting as conifer plantations can be a bit grim in bad weather and the surfaces, although good, deteriorate in the wet.
