Memorial but difficult to interpret without information

An abstract cast of bronze stands here as a souvenir, a reminder, a memorial to the reactor accident at Chernobyl, but how can one make such a thing concrete?

        Ivan Kazak (b. 1959, Vitebsk), 1992, bronze

The sculpture "Madonna of Chernobyl" shows a stylized female figure, a pregnant woman, sitting on the broken globe. The work of art focuses on the 1986 nuclear reactor accident in Chernobyl (Ukraine) and its consequences for people and the environment.

The sculpture was erected on the Mayor-Stahn-Wall on the occasion of Chernobyl Day on April 26, 2000. Since then, the annual start of the commemorative event for the Chernobyl district has taken place there, and the Belarusian population still suffers severely from the ecological damage caused by it.
