The architectural flagship of the thousand-year-old city is the town hall. This is a half-timbered building probably erected in 1533. Between 1582 and 1589, the façade on Lange Straße was given a seven-axis, plastered stepped gable made of brick in the style of the Weser Renaissance. The individual squadrons have French gables with palmette fillings and spheres; the wall surface is divided by sandstone pilaster strips and horizontal cornices. A two-storey bay window rises in front of the facade; the parapet reliefs depict the eight virtues and the coat of arms of Duke Wilhelm von Celle. The simple portal on the market side shows the insignia of the city held by an angel with the year 1585 and the Brunswick lion coat of arms.
In 1614 the first town hall tower with a bell was built. The tower was given its current form in 1778/79 and was renewed in 2012. In 1903, the historic town hall extension was built to match the town hall gable with the front facing Langen Straße.
Inside is a publicly accessible art gallery with Nienburg artists and Nienburg motifs.
