Almost nothing reliable is known about the life of St. George, to whom the church in Bad Gandersheim was consecrated, but the veneration of his person goes back a long way to early Christianity. A martyr who is equated with George is said to have lived in the third century.
Well known and widespread, however, is the legend of St. George slaying the dragon, mostly he is depicted - on paintings or as a statue - as the conqueror of the monster, often as a knight on horseback.
The day of remembrance of the very popular George - he is among other things the patron saint of the English Kingdom - in the saints calendar is on April 23rd.

This regulation refers to the early days of Gandersheim's settlement history:
In the area of St. George's Church, which probably dates back to the 10th century, there was already a 'Wik', a trading place, from the founding of the Gandersheim monastery in 852, to which the field name 'An der Wiek' still refers. The remains of an urn field found there in the 19th century point to the pre-Christian...
