With this system - a kind of cable car - the seaweed fishermen lifted their catch, which was plentiful on the coast of Brittany, up to the mainland using horses or with the help of winches. Behind the cable car there is a Four a Goemon - a soda oven - set into the ground, in which the dried seaweed was burned. In the 19th century, the ash was used not only for soda production, but also for heating and as fertilizer. It was also used in gunpowder production. The antiseptic effect of the seaweed (iodine tincture) was also used in medicine, and around 15 kg of iodine was extracted from 25 tons of seaweed. Napoleon once had factories built in Brittany in which iodine could be extracted from the leaves. Today, the seaweed fishermen go out in a boat and harvest seaweed on site using a kind of lawnmower. Their products are now mainly used in naturopathy and the food industry.
