These are algae ovens, used to produce soda for glass production and later iodine for medicinal purposes from the abundant seaweed deposits on the Breton coast. A laborious task, because five to six tons of fresh algae produce just under a ton of dried algae. Using brushwood and gorse fires, 200 kilograms of soda are obtained in the ovens, which in turn produces 10 kilograms of iodine.
