Jan Nepomuk Neumann was born in this house on March 28, 1811 into a mixed German-Czech family. It was only during his studies in České Budějovice that he really learned Czech, as his home town was predominantly German at the time and his family also spoke German at home. As there were more than enough priests in Bohemia, Neumann did not get a job immediately after completing his theology studies. In 1836 he therefore boarded a ship to New York. There was a shortage of priests in the diocese there, especially German-speaking priests (there were only three, the other 31 were Irish). Neumann traveled constantly, founded almost a hundred schools and eighty churches, became a priest in Baltimore in 1851 and finally Bishop of Philadelphia in 1852. After a personal audience with the Pope, he stopped in his home town on the way back in 1854. The people of Prachatice gave him a wonderful welcome. He continued to work tirelessly in Philadelphia until he collapsed and died on the street on January 5, 1860, at the age of just 48. The process of canonization was initiated as early as 1886, he was beatified in 1963 and declared a saint in 1977. The Catholic Church celebrates his memorial day on June 19. Thus the Prachatice boy Jan Nepomuk Neumann became the second saint from the USA - after Elizabeth Anne Seton.
