In Storegade you will find Randers' largest preserved three-storey half-timbered house. Legend has it that it was here that Niels Ebbesen killed Count Gert 700 years ago.

In 1332, the Danish king had to mortgage large parts of Denmark to German nobles to pay off the previous king's war debts. Jutland and Funen were mortgaged to the Hunchbacked Count, Count Gert of Holstein. The count starved both Danish peasants and nobles with high taxes, which led to a major uprising. The uprising reached its peak in 1340, when Niels Ebbesen and his men broke into the count's house in Storegade and killed him.

The murder had great significance - both for Denmark and for Niels Ebbesen. After the murder, Denmark got a Danish king again, and Niels Ebbesen became a national hero.

If you look closely, you will see that one of the shutters on the second floor is open. According to legend, this is the room where Count Gert was killed and the shutter must be open to ensure that the count's spirit can escape - even here so many centuries later. In fact, the story says that if the shutter is ever closed, misfortune and misfortune will befall Randers.

Today, there is a restaurant in the building.
