The spa of Cardó located at the top of the spectacular cliff of Salt del Frare, between Rasquera (Ribera d’Ebre) and Benifallet (Baix Ebre), near the Ebre river. The original building was built in 1606 by the Tortoise Carmelite Fra Pau de Crist, who established a religious community there. The complex was formed by the conventual buildings and a set of 14 chapels:
Saint Onofre de l'Agulla, Saint Roc, Holy Trinity, Saint Anne, Saint Agnes, Saint Elias, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Bernard, Saint Teresa, Saint Simeó de Benifallet, Saint Ángel, Saint Joseph and Saint Jerome
The convent was abolished with the ecclesiastical confiscations of 1835 and converted into a spa in 1866 using medicinal waters (bicarbonate and arsenical). Hospital of the republican army in the Battle of the Ebro, it returned to a spa from 1940 to 1967. Until the end of the 20th century it functioned as a mineral water bottling plant. It is currently in the process of restoration, at least theoretically.
