We were surprised by the tilted water level gauge and thought the "E"s or "3"s must be smaller/larger due to the tilt. Well, travel is educational. We found what we were looking for on Wikipedia: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pegel
It's a calibrated, tilted water level gauge, with divisions in decimetre increments. The deepest water point serves as a reference value, and the water depth can be read to within 1 cm. And indeed: even though we didn't see it, the divisions must be elongated.
