Tradition has it that this chapel was built near the ferry by fishermen who had promised to build a chapel for Our Lady if they caught a sturgeon. Instead of one, they caught seven. They then built the chapel in honour of the Seven Sorrows of Mary". (City of Dendermonde)

The Schipperskapelletje, also known as "Our Lady of the Feather" or "Our Lady of Need", is located at a fork in the Main Street.

The chapel is partly hedged and has a bench to relax in.

According to tradition, the chapel was built and rebuilt as a thank you for good fishing and to force a good passage through the nearby Scheldemeander. The exact year of construction is not known, but there is already a mention in 1783-1784 in the 'Land- and map book of Appels' of a chapel that is located at a crossroads - fork in the then-named Veerstraat or Oude Pontweg.
