Tips

  • St. Joseph's Church on the Kahlenberg
The Church of St. Joseph is a Roman Catholic branch church of the parish of Kahlenbergerdorf on the Kahlenberg
The origins of the church go back to the Camaldolese monastery that used to be on the Kahlenberg. The Camaldolese were settled on the Kahlenberg at the time of Ferdinand II and began building the Hermitage there in 1628/29. The cornerstone of the church was laid on August 10, 1629, which was largely completed by 1639. During the second Turkish siege of Vienna, the church was destroyed by the Turks on July 8, 1683. Although the fathers returned in the same year, the reconstruction or new construction of the church was not completed until 1734. In the course of the Josephine church reforms, the order was dissolved around 50 years later (1782). The court war councilor Leopold von Kriegl bought the church and most of the buildings of the Hermitage on April 14, 1783 for 28,550 guilders. After he initially wanted to turn the church building into a dance hall, he later repaired the church or rebuilt it and had it elevated to the status of a bar. On December 21, 1783, it was rededicated by the provost of the Klosterneuburg Floridus monastery.

  • In 1629 the Camaldolese laid the foundation stone for the church, which was largely completed with the Hermitage by 1639, but not yet fully completed by 1683. On July 8, 1683, it was set on fire by the Turks and suffered severe damage. The new building was not completed until 1734, the enclosing wall of the Hermitage in 1750.
