In the Teufelsmoor, an old SCHÖMA field railway was built on the Teufelsmoorstrasse at the junction towards Bornreihe. The attached wagons show how the peat was transported from the mining area to the peat factory in Neu-St. Jürgen with this field railway for over 70 years. The journeys began directly at the cutting edge in the Teufelsmoor peat factory (Turba). The mining machine moved in long rows through the moor and peeled the peat from the resulting wall. This remained stable because dry peat moss has a very special property. The compacted plant fibers created a kind of net. This is why mining machines can scrape off the peat or cut off peat bales. These remain dimensionally stable and, once completely dry, have the properties of very soft wood.
