The Rennsteig is the oldest and most famous long-distance hiking trail in Germany. It runs for exactly 169.3 kilometers from Hörschel near Eisenach to Blankenstein.

The trail over the ridge of the Thuringian Forest was once an important trade route for merchants and couriers, as well as a border route.

To the left and right of the Rennsteig, historic residential towns, traditional places and small mountain villages are waiting to be explored by you and are happy to welcome you as their guests. To ensure that you don't miss anything, there are a total of 40 "Rennsteig ladders" that show you things worth seeing in the immediate vicinity. If you follow the signs from this Rennsteig portal, you will eventually reach the town portal in Brotterode.

      Beautiful shelter on the Rennsteig.

There you can take a breather before the Rennsteig climbs steeply upwards. Don't miss a detour to the right to the Beerberggrotte. In the past, there was no view anywhere, but the dense spruce forest is now gone and there is now a clear view. 😅
