On December 19, 1898, the entire route from Kleinschmalkalden to Brotterode was opened. The passenger trains usually ran from Schmalkalden to Brotterode without having to change trains. On December 14, 1964, the Auwallenburg–Brotterode section was shut down and dismantled. In 1986, the tracks to Brotterode were laid again to connect a coal-fired power station in Brotterode. In the course of reunification, the power plant was shut down again in 1990.Goods traffic between Kleinschmalkalden and Auwallenburg was discontinued on January 31, 1994. The line was dismantled in 2001/02, as was the Schmalkalden–Kleinschmalkalden line.A railway track cycle path, the Mommelstein cycle path, was built on part of the route.

Beautiful old disused railway bridge in the middle of the forest, surrounded by huge rocks. It is forbidden to enter, but it is worth a look from below and from above.
