Trento's city walls no longer exist in their original form, but remnants have been preserved in the form of individual towers, such as the Torre Vanga and the Torre Civica. The historic city was greatly expanded and transformed in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly as a result of the Austrian fortification strategy, which led to the partial dismantling of the old city walls. Today, the city is a center for art, culture, and tourism.
