The vineyard covers an area of 2.2 hectares and is divided into two sections: the assortment, in which 94 different grape varieties are grown for demonstration purposes, and the test plots, which are used to test new varieties.

On the recommendation of the Science Council of the then Agricultural University, a chair for viticulture was established in Hohenheim in 1964/1965. In 1970 today's vineyards were built on the castle meadow.

In the plots, for example, tests are carried out with fungus-resistant new varieties (Orion, Regent, Phoenix, Sirius) in comparison to non-fungus-resistant ones (Müller-Thurgau, Kerner, Schwarzriesling) and studies on the nutrition of the vine.

The wines of the varieties grown here are matured in the castle cellar and marketed under the individual vineyard designation "Hohenheimer Schlossberg".

The gentle slope covered in vines, cultivated by the University of Hohenheim for research and teaching purposes, measures just two hectares. The Hohenheimers are particularly experienced in cultivating the "Regent" grape variety, which has now become a well-known red wine beyond the state's borders.

I'm assuming no wine is made from it as 94 varietals are grown for demonstration.
But certainly one makes test wines from new breeds.
