The Franziska Memorial stands in the historic heart of the Exotic Garden at the crossroads between the Roman Inn and the Playhouse, as well as the Japanese Lake and the Perennial Terrace. Franziska Theresia, née Baroness von Bermirdin and divorced Baroness Leutrum von Ertingen, was initially the mistress, but later, as Imperial Countess of Hohenheim, the second wife of Duke Carl Eugene and thus Duchess of Württemberg.

Coming from a family of religious refugees, Franziska von Hohenheim rose to become Duchess of Württemberg, only to ultimately die impoverished and hated again. Her life story is eventful, and her steadfastness in her faith is admirable. After a first failed marriage, Franziska met Duke Carl Eugen at the age of 22. At that time, he was an arbitrary ruler, a spendthrift, and exceptionally greedy. Hated by the people and abandoned by his first wife, he lived as the epitome of absolutism and fathered countless illegitimate children with mistresses and playmates. The encounter with Franziska changed the duke and thus also his style of government. With her unshakable faith and piety, Franziska moved Duke Carl Eugen to become a just ruler who cared for his people and admitted past mistakes. It is no exaggeration to say that Franziska saved the duchy. She received the title of Imperial Countess of Hohenheim. After the wedding, which the couple had to wait a long time for until Carl Eugen's first wife died, Franziska became Duchess of Württemberg. However, only until his death in 1793, when she—like so many duchesses before and after her—was banished to Kirchheim Castle and awaited her own death in poverty, hated by her relatives.
Carl Eugen had the Franziska Church in Stuttgart-Birkach built for her. Her grave in Kirchheim's St. Martin's Church was only subsequently marked accordingly.
