It was so large that one could drive into it with a horse-drawn cart. Besides this ice cellar, there were five more in the valley, each of varying sizes.
Where possible, ice ponds were created nearby, the ice was cut off, and large blocks were transported to the cellar.
Ice pools were created in meadows for ice extraction. Chestnut trees were usually planted around the ice cellars, which provided plenty of shade in the summer.
