Main entrance to the New Fortress of Corfu.
Under the supervision of the architect Francesco Vitelli, the New Fortress was built between 1576 and 1645, when numerous buildings and churches were destroyed in order to find the necessary material for construction.
The New Fortress was mostly destroyed during the Second World War.
Today you can admire the paved access road with its gate that still shows the Venetian symbol of the Lion of St. Mark.
The New Fortress is located above the old port and is a linear and massive structure with some internal tunnels that connected the old fort with other parts of the city in the past and are not usable today.
It is perhaps less suggestive than the Old Fortress but it is worth visiting because it offers splendid views of the city and the coast.
The New Fortress has been recently renovated and today hosts painting exhibitions, photography exhibitions, sculpture exhibitions and also concerts and other important art activities.
