In 1748, construction began on the Saint Anne Chapel in the hamlet of Mellaer. The chapel was financed by the guild brothers and residents of the hamlet. Contributions were even requested from residents in the surrounding villages. The nearby redoubt (in the current Ruiterstraat) was also paid for with money they had in cash. Later, the redoubt masters would also act as chapel masters and were therefore responsible for the management of the chapel. The pastor of Paal paid for the altar.

The official consecration of the chapel took place on 1 June 1756, more than a year after the building was completed. On this occasion, the relic of Saint Anne was transferred from the nearby Chapel of the Beukenboom to the new chapel in procession. The prince-bishop gave permission for mass to be celebrated in this chapel every Tuesday.

The limited sources we have about the chapel do show a very active devotion with great involvement of the local community. This also explains the presence of a standing rocking chair from the local shooting guild near the chapel. This was probably only removed in the 1980s, when the shooting guild moved further down the Sint-Annastraat.

In 1951, the chapel and its surroundings were protected as a monument and landscape. The municipal authorities have carried out a number of necessary interventions in recent years, but it must nevertheless be stated that the condition in the chapel was not favourable. In 2017, the step was therefore taken towards a structural management plan with a view to a general restoration. The chapel was officially reopened on Heritage Day in 2024.

The chapel was built between 1748 and 1755 by the local shooting guild of Saint Anna. The building consists of simple whitewashed bricks with a saddle roof and in front of it a lower entrance with also a saddle roof. The roof of the chapel is crowned by a roof turret with a bell and a high helmet roof as a spire. The text on the facade in primitive letters reads: S. Anna tarred. The pointed gables show peasant braiding. The facade has a few wall anchors and the side wall is supported by a buttress. The apse is three-sided. The interior is covered by a barrel vault. This is provided with stucco work in Louis XV style. The chapel has a triptych from the second half of the 16th century, depicting the Calvary with Saint Martin on the left and Saint Barbara on the right. There is also a Saint Anne-ten-Drieën from around 1510. The polychrome main altar is in the Baroque style from the 18th century. Since 1951, the chapel and its surroundings have been protected as a monument. In 2022, thorough renovation works on the chapel started. On 21 April 2024, the renovated chapel was inaugurated.
