After being destroyed by a fire in 1870, Rimetea was rebuilt. Whitewashed houses were built, richly decorated with works of local folk art and with the characteristic green-painted shutters. Particularly picturesque examples of this style of construction can be found on the hillside of the market square (Strada Felsö). These houses belonged to ironmongers and foundry owners of the 19th century. The ironmongers' shops were located in the high cellars, which you have to climb down a few steps from street level.

Hiking

Since 1996, Rimetea has been under a project to preserve its architectural treasures. Around 140 traditional buildings have been saved through this program. Their restoration, especially here at the Upper Market, has led to the town becoming known beyond the region. Today, it is one of the most important tourist attractions in the region.
