The small local history museum on the main square of Rimetea provides an insight into the eventful history of the region, which has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. Celts and Dacians exploited the mineral resources. The Romans continued mining. Coins from the time of the emperors Antoninus Pius and Maximinus Thrax have been found. The medieval town was first mentioned in 1257 under the name Toroczcko (Trascău) and soon became known for the iron ore deposits in the area.
