    Cemetery Chapel "Ossuary", Engelberg
On the way from the village to the monastery church, at the entrance to the cemetery, is the mortuary chapel, the "Ossuary". The cemetery chapel was built around 1608. An old winged altar adorns the interior of the chapel. The main figure is Mary Magdalene, the saint who was the first to spread the message of Jesus' resurrection. According to Christian tradition, she is the saint who accompanies our deceased, along with Christopher.
In the lower part of the winged altar there is a figure of St. Anne herself (a depiction of St. Anne with her daughter Mary and the baby Jesus), who always had great intercession power among the faithful.
The cemetery chapel plays an important role for our village community. As soon as the priest is aware of a death, this is announced to the entire community by ringing the bells. This usually takes place at 11.40 a.m. or 5.40 p.m. If the death bell rings three times (with a break), it is a man. If it rings twice, it is a woman and once a child. The coffin or urn of the deceased is laid out in the cemetery chapel so that the population can say goodbye individually. Funerals can also be held on a small scale.
The side altar outside the choir, which is dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua, is more recent. The Anthony's box, or the bread for the poor, is now located in the monastery church. Anyone who can't find something or has a serious request promises St. Anthony a "lump sum". If the lost item is found or the request is fulfilled, the "lump sum" should be thrown in there. This box is intended for the poor.
