Only a few cities, like Limburg, have preserved the entire ensemble of medieval buildings almost intact. This is why the formerly walled city center between St. George's Cathedral, Grabenstrasse and the old Lahn Bridge from 1315 is now a listed building as a whole. Historic Limburg was on the old trade route from Cologne to Frankfurt. Here in the old town, the narrowest point of the route was in Fahrgasse, at what is now Kleine Rütsche 4.
The width of this point is therefore still marked on the Heumarkt in Cologne.

The large supply and administrative facilities that a modern city needs were located in the immediate vicinity of the old town. The old and new centers complement each other and today together form the pulsating heart of this tradition-conscious and so modern city.

All of these planned and carefully implemented renovation measures led to Limburg being awarded a gold medal in the national "City Design and Monument Preservation" competition in 1978.
