In the 11th century, the town expanded from the 1.8 hectare monastery and castle district towards the west down the castle hill and was surrounded by a city wall in the early 12th century. This ran roughly along the southern edge of what would later become the Erbacher Hof, on the eastern side of what would later become Rosengasse, south of today's Böhmergasse and east of today's Kolpinggasse back up to the castle. The city wall enclosed around 11 hectares, including the castle district.
