The Resort is 15,000 hectar and stretches out way over 20km, depending on perspective.
Being a private resort, it has fences around to protect both animals and humans inside.
I am not repeating any catalogues here, you can do that at:
thanda.com/thanda-locations/south-africa/
But I found it very impressive and easy to remember that there are (estimated number),
for example:
- more than 100 lions
- more than 100 girafs
- around 100 elephants
- close to 100 rhinos ("black" and "wide")
- more than 100 cheetahs
- 10 - 20 leopards
- a few hundred species of birds
- big number of buffaloes, zebras, warthogs and hyaena
- animals so far unknown to me, like Monitor Lizards and many, many others
They all gather around a large number of small to medium sized water reserves and creeks or rivers (sometimes disappearing during dry season)
All of them, except the leopards, can be seen repeatedly and even from close, on the wildlife tours that are not only offered, but included in the packege prices (accommodation, meals, transportation, 2 tours per day, 3 hours each, with a Driver&Guide plus a Tracker).
The tours are phantastic, fascinating, thrilling. Explanations from our Guide (driving the car & explaining) and our Tracker (sitting outside in front, observing and directing) help a lot in understanding what's going on around us and, above all, the specific Information about the animals we see and how they live in their environment.
IT IS HARD TO TAKE SHOTS WHILE THE CAR IS GOING LEFT AND RIGHT AND BUlMPING UP AND DOWN. So not all my pictures are correctly framed, please, bear with me, I typically tried to get several of them if the subject was still in place. In most cases this will unfortunately NOT happen!
So the results often leave room for improvement.
The resort centers: there is a Tented Camp (nice center with all amenities and tent-like mini-houses for 2, with terrace). There is a Lodge with 5* accommodation. There are even Villas with "I don't know what" if price really doesn't matter.
I stayed at the Tented Camp. I saw the first two, found them both phantastic. Personally I prefer the Tented Camp: I think it fits better in this environment.
Am I happy with the eperience: no doubt about it!!!
The quality and the intensity of the experience are outstanding.
