The street "Alter Graben" in Bamberg owes its name to its location: it once ran along the outer city moat of Bamberg's medieval fortifications, more precisely the fortification of the St. Stephan immunity. This moat was gradually filled in and built over.
Today, the "Alte Graben" is an inner-city street in the Berg area of the historic old town, which belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It extends from Oberer Stephansberg to Oberer Leinritt.
