During the Reformation in 1536, Catholic services were abolished in Lausanne and were not permitted again until 1798. At first they were again practiced in private homes. From 1812, Catholic services were allowed to be held in the Temple de la Mercerie, but this church was also used by other denominations. Because of this unsatisfactory situation, construction began on a new church on Avenue de l'Université, but it was never completed due to a landslide.

At the new location at Rue du Valentin 3, construction of Notre-Dame du Valentin in the neoclassical style began in 1832 under the direction of the architect Henri Perregaux. It is the first Catholic church in Lausanne after the Reformation and today also its largest. It was consecrated on May 31, 1835.
