A Bavarian level stone is a stone that was erected between 1838 and 1842 within the borders of the Bavarian Palatinate and was used for trigonometric height measurements.
The level stones are made of sandstone and in most cases have a square cross-section with an edge length of 1 foot and a height of 7 feet (3 feet in the ground and 4 feet above). 1 foot = 29.1859 cm. There are, however, deviations; some stones do not have a square cross-section and not all of them have the inscription with an (underlined) triangle and the year 1838 or 1839 engraved on them. Special level stones bear the inscription HDNP main triangle network point.
