The double-headed eagle in Lindendorf Haldern, Bahnhofstrasse 48, is proven to be the oldest inn on the Lower Rhine. The foundations probably date back to 1611. The Zeljko Jagodic family, who had previously leased this house for many years, acquired it in 2011 for the 300th anniversary celebrations. The hotel's rooms were renovated to 4* level, a winter garden was added and the car park was redesigned. You can eat excellently here and it is always a pleasure. Recommended! In 1711, a new postal route from Wesel via Emmerich to Arnhem was put into operation and this inn and tavern was the last horse-changing station before the Dutch border. One autumn morning, it is said, there was a great deal of excitement in Haldern. For the first time, a French diplomat with his entourage was to stop in Haldern on behalf of his master Louis XIV on his journey between Wesel and Arnhem. The innkeeper at the time, Holland, had placed the relay station (post station) under the protection of the double-headed eagle of the Imperial Chief Postmaster of Thurn and Taxis. This is how this inn got its name.
1*Coat of arms: The Thurn and Taxis royal family, which had the badger as its heraldic animal until the 1530s, was given the postal service as an imperial hereditary fief in the middle of the 16th century. A "coat of arms improvement diploma" from 1539 shows the double-headed eagle in the coat of arms of Thurn and Taxis for the first time. (Source: golden plaque at the entrance to the inn)
2*Post station: Relay station (relais = French for relay, intermediate station) on a postal route, where the riders and horses changed, while the closed and sealed postal bag (leather bag = leather backpack) was passed on like a relay. Another task of the post stations was to provide couriers and postal travelers with authorization with horses and an escort to the next exchange station, which from the travelers' point of view was called "posting." In the vicinity of post stations there were often so-called food stalls for catering as well as tradesmen necessary for the operation, such as blacksmiths and wheelwrights (= wheelwrights: craftsmen who make wheels, wagons and other agricultural equipment from wood).

At the Doppeladler in Halddern you can eat and drink very well, which is reflected in the price. The only thing we recommend is booking a table in advance to ensure you have a seat.
