Aesica was the ninth fort on Hadrian's Wall and stands between Vercovicium to the east and Magnis to the west. The purpose of this stronghold was to guard the Caw Gap, where the Haltwhistle Burn crosses the Wall. It is believed that the fort was completed in 128 AD. It is unique compared to others because it is the only fort that was built south of the wall.
