Border river

The Wurm forms the border river between Herzogenrath and Übach-Palenberg with Kerkrade and Landgraaf in the Netherlands. The border is not the current or the middle of the river, but the eastern or right bank of the Wurm. The river therefore flows on Dutch territory in this section.

From the Middle Ages to the 19th century, the Wurm formed the border between the then independent towns of Geilenkirchen and Hünshoven. It was also the border line between the dioceses of Cologne and Liège.

Also in the late Middle Ages and at the time of the Aachen Empire, the Wurm in the section from the Wolfsfurt mills to the Bardenberg mill was part of the outer ring of the Aachen moat and in the area of Bardenberg and Herzogenrath it was the border river between the duchies of Brabant (west of the Wurm) and Jülich (east of the Wurm). In particular, the Wilhelmstein Castle.
