As part of the urban development project led by the Bliesen architect Hanns Schönecker to transform the St. Wendel Castle Square from a car park into a square, the "new Castle Square fountain" was created, a "jewel for the city". It is one of the winners of a competition called by the then Minister of the Interior Werner Scherer for "Fountains as a meeting place for citizens". It was created in 1984 by the Werner Glöckner sculpting company from Hangard. The fountain is adapted to the terrain, which slopes slightly to the west, via an octagonal staircase base with sandstone steps. The octagonal sandstone fountain basin is designed in the form of a bulbous, protruding, profiled cornice. In the middle of the basin, a flat fountain bowl rises above a base, which is filled to the brim with water from a fountain. The water "hangs" over the edge of the bowl like a transparent curtain, which is moved by the wind and occasionally broken by pigeons. The St. Wendel Castle Square fountain has actually become a meeting place for citizens.
