The new market place, built in 1976/77 in the area between Brodenheckstrasse and Karenweg, was initially given the name "Neu-Markt".A short time later, however, it was decided to give the square its current name "Beda Platz". This name is intended to keep alive the memory of the oldest form of Bitburg's name. Beda, the settlement on the dominant hill between Nims and Kyll, was most likely founded in pre-Roman times.Roman inscriptions from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD record the Latinized form "Beda vicus". Bitburg was a day's journey north of the royal seat of Trier on an important military road that crossed the Eifel and connected the cities of Trier and Cologne. However, Bedaplatz not only serves as a market and parking lot, but is also used as an event space for the international folklore festival in July, the Bedamarkt, the autumn fair and other events.
