However, around 100 years earlier there had been an attempt to dig peat on a large scale in the moor near Rhaude and to create a moor settlement.
This is documented by documents from the state archive in Aurich, according to which citizens of Emden had already begun digging a canal from the Rhauder Tief westwards into the raised moor in 1649. The "Oll Wiek" is now located at this historical location.
