On April 19, 1769, Frederick the Great, King of Prussia and since 1744 Prince of East Frisia, signed the founding document for the Rhauderfehn moor settlement. However, around 100 years earlier there had been an attempt to dig peat on a large scale in the moor near Rhaude and to create a moor settlement. This is documented by documents from the state archive in Aurich, according to which citizens of Emden had already begun digging a canal from the Rhauder Tief westwards into the raised moor in 1649. The "Oll Wiek" is now located at this historical location. It cannot be proven why the project failed. The municipality of Rhauderfehn restored the "Oll Wiek" in 1990; the canal is around 260 m long.
