It was built in the 15th century
(approx. 1480) by the Venetians on the remains of an ancient acropolis. Above the main entrance, the winged Lion of Saint Mark, the symbol of Venice, still stands today.
The complex offers one of the
most spectacular panoramic views over the island's capital and the Ionian Sea.

It is very pleasant there, however, and worth it. And it is so steeped in history that it is surprising. Before the Venetians, there were Romans, Brits, Italians, Germans and Brits again, what more could you want?
