The structure was built in the 16th century by the Venetians, who occupied the island from 1485.
Originally, it served as an aqueduct that supplied the entire city of Zakynthos with water. Today, mainly the ornate stone building with small embossed inscriptions and a stone well have been preserved.
The structure is made of characteristic local stone and shows clear influences of Venetian engineering. Old stone channels and pipelines that led water from natural springs into the city can still be recognized.
