Breitensee is a very beautiful street village whose fields extend into Thuringia in the north and east. This exposed location meant that Breitensee led a rather isolated existence for 40 years and had hardly any connection to the nearby villages in Thuringia. This changed abruptly after the reunification of Germany. The regained unity can be felt especially at Pentecost and on the first weekend in July, when the forest and bakehouse festivals are celebrated in Breitensee. Festivals that have brought many people to Breitensee to celebrate and be merry for decades.
